“If you want to drink, that’s your business. If you want to stop, that’s ours.”

Thinking About Quitting Drinking? Here’s What to Expect at Your First Meeting

If you have a desire to stop drinking, you’re welcome—no matter your background, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, income, or profession.

At most meetings, someone will ask: “Is this anyone’s first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting?” You’re free to introduce yourself by first name—or simply listen. There’s no pressure to speak.

There’s no cost to attend. While a basket may be passed to help cover meeting expenses, newcomers are encouraged to let it pass for the first few meetings.

You can just listen and observe or share when you’re ready—it’s completely your choice.
